Consultations and Coaching

Emma offers one-to-one family history consultations for a wide range of needs: solving genealogy mysteries, breaking down brick walls, finding living relatives, and navigating complex records. These sessions are popular with researchers at all levels, from those just starting out to experienced family historians with a specific problem to untangle.

During a consultation, Emma will discuss your research to date, answer your questions, and help you build a plan for moving forward. She shares her screen to research alongside you, help develop your online family tree, and demonstrate practical techniques and research methods. Sessions typically last an hour but can be arranged for longer.

Consultations take place via Zoom, WhatsApp, Google Meet, Skype, FaceTime, or telephone. Follow-up sessions can also be arranged in person in St Andrews, by mutual agreement.

DNA and Genetic Genealogy Consultations

DNA testing can reveal remarkable things: unexpected ancestry, unknown relatives, and answers to mysteries that documentary records alone cannot solve. Emma is an experienced genetic genealogist and member of ISOGG, and provides expert guidance to help you interpret your results and put them to work in your family history research.

A typical DNA consultation works as follows:

• Initial Consultation (1 hour) — Emma will guide you through your DNA results and their implications for your family tree, and discuss next steps.
• Research Day — Following the consultation, Emma conducts in-depth analysis of your DNA matches and integrates findings into your family history.
• Follow-Up Support — Expert advice on contacting matches, refining your tree, or exploring additional testing options.

Family Health History

Emma also offers consultations exploring family health and mental health history. These sessions are available to those with a general interest in their family's medical background, as well as those in recovery, those exploring emotional genealogy or epigenetics — uncovering patterns of trauma or family secrets across generations — and those for whom knowledge of family history has been recommended by a therapist or other medical professional.

Family History Plan

If you'd like to carry out your own research but aren't sure how best to approach it, Emma can create a guided family history plan personally tailored to your circumstances. This gives you a clear structure to follow independently, with the confidence of knowing your approach has been shaped by an expert.
